Some flooring materials handle point loads (weight concentrated on small legs or wheels) better than others. Very soft woods, some laminates, or cushioned vinyls can dent under heavy wardrobes, pianos, or large bookcases. On the other hand, extremely hard materials may crack if weight is uneven on a weak subfloor.
If you roughly know where your big pieces will live – a large bed here, a big wardrobe there, a heavy dining table in that spot – you can choose materials and underlay that support those loads. You might go for a tougher grade of wood, thicker laminate, or properly supported tile bed in those areas.
Planning also helps you avoid placing joins or weak points right under heavy furniture, which can cause issues later.
So you’re not just picking a floor in isolation; you’re designing a surface that will live under real furniture, not just empty rooms.
