How can using baskets in open storage keep things practical but still visually tidy?

Open shelves and cubbies are great for access, but terrible for hiding visual mess. A row of loose cables, toys, medicines and chargers on open shelves is always going to look chaotic, no matter how functional it is.

Baskets act as “soft drawers.” You can toss items in quickly – remote cables, kids’ small toys, spare toiletries – and from the outside, all you see is a row of neat containers. Lift a basket and everything you need is inside, but you’re not staring at it all day.

Different sizes can live together as long as they share some visual link – same material, colour family, or style. Labels help if you want to be extra organised.

It’s a simple way to keep open storage practical for daily life without sacrificing a calm, tidy look.
