The classic “spare key under the mat” trick is so common that it’s the first place anyone with bad intentions will check. Other clichés – under a stone right by the door, in the flower pot next to the step – are hardly better.
These spots feel convenient, but they’re accidents waiting to happen. If someone watches your routine, they can quickly figure out when the house is empty and where the spare is likely hidden. Once they have that key, there’s no broken lock or door to signal forced entry.
Safer options include leaving a spare with a trusted neighbour, using a proper lockbox with a code, or upgrading to a digital lock where you can control access with PINs.
The goal is the same – you don’t want to be locked out – but the method should not be the one every movie and TV show has already exposed.
