Why is it worth checking how well the building’s common areas are cleaned and maintained?

Common areas – staircases, lifts, lobbies, parking spaces – are like the “face and bones” of a building. If they’re dirty, poorly lit, or clearly neglected, it usually means building management is either careless or struggling with funds and organisation.

Even if your flat is beautiful inside, you use these spaces every day. You see them when you leave in the morning and when you return tired at night. If the lift smells bad, paint is peeling, or rubbish sits around, the whole place feels less pleasant and a bit less safe.

Good common area maintenance also hints that repairs (like leaks, broken lights, or damaged tiles) are more likely to be handled quickly. Poor maintenance suggests the opposite – that problems will linger and maybe get worse.

You’re not just buying or renting four walls; you’re joining a shared environment. Its condition has a big impact on daily experience.
