How can fitting aerators on taps reduce both water use and splashing?

Aerators are small fittings that go on the end of many taps. They mix air into the water stream and control flow, so you get a softer, more even output instead of a harsh, fast jet.

Because the water is being spread and aerated, it often feels just as strong for washing hands or rinsing dishes, but actually uses less water per minute. That means lower use without you having to consciously “save.”

Aerators also help reduce splashing, especially in shallow basins where a strong stream tends to bounce everywhere. The water falls more gently and controllably, so mirrors, counters and clothes stay drier.

They’re a tiny addition, usually easy to install, but they improve everyday comfort and reduce waste in the background.
