There’s a natural urge to fill shelves – “if there’s space, use it.” But packed shelves can quickly feel heavy and chaotic, especially in small rooms. Your eye has nowhere to rest, and the room feels visually noisy.
Leaving some empty space – a gap between stacks of books, an open patch next to a plant, a shelf that holds only one or two objects – introduces breathing room. It makes the pieces you do display stand out more. A single favourite photo on a quieter shelf gets noticed; in a crowd of twenty items, it disappears.
Practically, empty space also gives you room to add new things over time without having to overhaul the entire arrangement.
Styling is a bit like conversation. If everyone talks at once, it’s overwhelming. If there are pauses, you listen better.
