Why might placing two smaller lamps be better than one very bright overhead light in some rooms?

Overhead lights are practical, but they can be harsh. A single bright source from above tends to flatten faces, create strong shadows, and make rooms feel more like offices or clinics than relaxing spaces.

Two (or more) smaller lamps placed at different points – a floor lamp near the sofa, a table lamp on a sideboard – spread softer light around at eye level. This creates pockets of cosiness and depth. You can turn one on for a gentle glow or both for a brighter, still-comfortable feel.

It also gives you flexibility. Watching TV? Maybe just one lamp behind you. Reading? The lamp next to your chair. Having guests? A few warm lamps and maybe candles feel much more welcoming than one blazing tube light.

You’re basically sculpting the mood with more control instead of flooding the room with one strong beam.
