How can noticing small piles of roofing material in gutters warn you about wear and tear?

Gutters often catch more than just leaves. On tiled or shingled roofs, tiny granules or flakes from the roofing material itself can start to collect over time. A small amount is normal as things age, but noticeable piles of grit, broken bits, or flakes are a sign that the surface is shedding.

That shedding means the protective outer layers are breaking down, which can reduce waterproofing and shorten the roof’s life. In metal roofs, rust flakes or paint chips in the gutter tell a similar story.

By checking gutters during cleaning, you’re not just removing debris; you’re reading clues about the condition of the roof above. If the volume of roofing material in the gutter suddenly increases, it might be time to have a professional inspect things before leaks begin.

The gutters are basically collecting “messages” from the roof. It pays to look at them.
